Why Am I In Pain?

Do you remember exactly how you hurt yourself and when the pain started, or does your pain come on randomly? Many people can be unaware that they have injured themselves; they only notice the pain that follows the injury! Below are some of the common reasons for wrist, hand, and elbow pain:

Fracture

Fractures in the upper extremities are common injuries associated with falls because the natural reaction is to try and catch yourself. During the healing process, the fingers, wrist, and elbow may become extremely stiff, and range of motion and strength can be lost.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The carpal tunnel is a narrow canal on your wrist that runs beneath the palm of your hand. Its responsibility is to protect the median nerve and the tendons that allow you to bend your fingers.

Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when too much pressure is placed on the median nerve, causing crowding and irritation of the carpal tunnel. As a result of this illness, you may experience numbness, stiffness, or pain in your fingers, hands, wrists, or forearms. Resolve Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation will treat your carpal tunnel syndrome safely and comfortably, allowing you to avoid surgery.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is known as an "overuse injury" because it develops gradually over time. This condition can happen when tendons become inflamed, causing swelling and pain, especially when the affected area is moved.

Nerve injuries

You may be experiencing numbness, tingling, or loss of temperature sensations if you injured one of the nerves that run through your elbow, forearm, wrist, or hand. Muscle function is altered in severe cases of nerve damage, and paralysis can occur. Nerve injuries are typically the result of overuse and result in swelling. Swelling inhibits proper circulation, impairing the nerve's ability to function properly.

Tennis elbow

Tennis elbow refers to lateral (outside) epicondylitis, inflammation of the tendons surrounding the elbow. It occurs when performing repetitive tasks that require gripping and extending the wrist, such as holding a tennis racket, paintbrush, or hammer. Severe tenderness will be present around the outside of your elbow and will cause pain when gripping, lifting, or twisting your forearm.

Golfer’s elbow

Medial (inside) epicondylitis is inflammation of the tendons surrounding the elbow and is referred to as "golfer's elbow." It is similar to tennis elbow, but the pain is on the inside of the elbow. The overuse of the muscles that flex your wrist and fingers leads to this injury.

Sprain / Strain

Sprains and strains are common in the hand, wrist, and elbow. They can be caused by a sudden overstretching of the tissues. Overstretching can result in a tear, which causes swelling, pain, and difficulty moving.

You may be able to identify the source of your pain from the list above, or you may be having an entirely different experience. Regardless, contact Resolve Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation so our therapists can definitively determine the source of your pain, offer treatment options, and get you on your way to living a pain-free life.
